The two brands on the wall

Hosa

Hosa has made cables since 1984, when Sho Sato started the company in the U.S. with a borrowed desk and telephone. The line runs from everyday cables to the Pro line, with REAN connectors by Neutrik, and the Edge line, with genuine Neutrik connectors. 602 Hosa cables are listed here.

Technical Pro

Technical Pro, out of Edison, New Jersey, is the budget side of the wall: XLR, RCA, 1/4-inch and 1/8-inch cables in 18-gauge for short runs and 16-gauge for long ones, plus 12-gauge 1/4-inch speaker cable. 22 Technical Pro cables are listed here.

XLR cables 62

Three pins and a locking plug. Mic to mixer, mixer to powered speaker, speaker to speaker. They're balanced, so a long run stays quiet. This is the cable every rig needs a spare of.

Which length: Mic on a stand: 10 to 15 ft. Mixer to speakers on the same side: 25 ft. Across a hall or a backyard: 50 ft.

XLR to 1/4-inch and RCA 77

One end XLR, the other end something else. Use these to run a controller's 1/4-inch or RCA outs into a powered speaker's XLR input, or to plug a mic into a 1/4-inch jack.

Which length: Controller to speaker: 10 to 25 ft. Gear on the same table: 3 to 6 ft.

Heavy cable from a power amp to a passive speaker. The plug twists and locks, so a kicked cable stays put. Powered speakers don't use these; they take XLR.

Controller to the first light, then light to light. It looks like XLR, but it's built for data, so lights don't glitch on a long run. Match the pins on your lights: 3-pin or 5-pin.

IEC C13 is the plug on the back of most speakers, mixers and lights. The PRX and PRXN cables lock into powerCON TRUE1 inlets on newer lights. C14-to-C13 jumpers daisy-chain power from light to light.

USB-B and USB-C cables plug a DJ controller or audio interface into a laptop. MIDI cables connect keyboards and older controllers.

Which length: For USB, shorter is better: 3 to 10 ft. MIDI: 3 to 15 ft.

What cable does a powered speaker take?

Almost always XLR from the mixer or controller. speakON is for passive cabinets with a separate amp. If you're not sure, text Joe a photo of the back of the speaker.

Can I use an XLR mic cable for DMX?

On a short run it sometimes works, but DMX cable is built for data, and on a long run the lights glitch less. Ask Joe.
