Your First DJ Controller: 2-Channel, 4-Channel or Standalone?
Buying your first DJ setup is exciting and confusing. There are a lot of models and two main software choices. Here is how we help people pick, and what happens after you buy.
2-channel controllers: where most people start
A 2-channel controller has two decks and a mixer in one unit. It plugs into your laptop over USB and controls DJ software. That is all you need to learn beatmatching, transitions and cue points.
The Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4 is the controller we point most beginners to. It works with rekordbox and Serato DJ Lite, has smart features to help with transitions, and is light enough to carry to a friend's party. If you already know you like scratching and open-format sets, the DDJ-REV5 has a battle-style layout with a pro-feel crossfader.
4-channel controllers: more room to grow
Four channels let you layer more tracks at once, like an acapella over an instrumental, or loops over a set. The Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX10 adds stem separation so you can pull vocals or drums out of a track live.
Most beginners do not need four channels on day one. But if you are serious and do not want to upgrade in a year, it can make sense. It is bigger and heavier, so think about your space and your car.
Standalone systems: no laptop needed
A standalone unit like the Pioneer DJ XDJ-RX3 or the AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ plays music straight from a USB drive. It has its own screen and processing, so no laptop is required. That is what working DJs like for weddings and parties, because there is one less thing to crash.
You still prepare your music in rekordbox at home, analyze it, and export to USB. Many standalone units can also run as a controller for software when you want.
Serato vs rekordbox
Both are solid. Rekordbox is Pioneer DJ's own software, and it is the format club players and standalone units read. If you ever plan to play on club gear, learning rekordbox helps.
Serato is popular with open-format and hip-hop DJs, and many battle-style controllers are built around it. Check which software your controller unlocks and which features need a paid plan. You can use either one to learn. Pick the one your controller supports best, then stick with it long enough to build your library and your cue points.

Do I need speakers to start?
You need headphones to cue and something to hear the mix. Studio monitors or a powered PA speaker both work. Headphones alone are fine for practice.
Can I switch from Serato to rekordbox later?
Yes. Many controllers work with both. Your cue points and playlists may need some work to move over, so it helps to choose early.
Will my laptop work?
Most recent laptops run DJ software fine. Check the software's requirements, or bring it in and Joe will take a look.
