6.5-Inch Car Speakers Compared: Coaxial vs Component from JL Audio, Alpine, Kicker, Focal, Hertz and Pioneer

Pick a coaxial pair like the Pioneer TS-G1620F, Kicker DS 43DSC6504 or JL Audio C1-650X for a simple drop-in upgrade on a factory radio. Pick a high-sensitivity pair like the Focal ICU 165 or ISU 165 if you are keeping the factory radio and want more volume from it. Pick a component set like the JL Audio C2-650, Kicker KS 51KSS6504 or Alpine R2-S65C when you can mount the tweeters up high and plan to add an amplifier.

Coaxial or component

A coaxial speaker has the tweeter mounted in the middle of the woofer, so one speaker goes in one hole. It is the easiest swap for a factory door speaker. A component set splits the woofer and the tweeter, with a separate crossover, so the tweeter can sit higher in the dash or the sail panel. The Alpine and Hertz listings point out what that buys you: a clearer front stage and better imaging than a coaxial.

Every speaker here is a 6.5-inch model on our listings. We are an authorized dealer for JL Audio, Alpine, Kicker, Focal and Pioneer, and we install in our own bay at 8696 Atlantic Ave.

Side by side

This table is built only from our own product listings. Where a listing does not state a spec, the cell says so instead of guessing.

Sensitivity tells you how loud a speaker plays on a given amount of power, so it matters most on a factory radio. Mounting depth matters for fit: a door with a window close behind the speaker needs a shallow one.

On a factory radio

A factory radio has little power, so efficient speakers make the biggest difference. The Focal ICU 165 coaxial and ISU 165 component set both list 93 dB sensitivity, the highest in this table, and the ISU 165 listing notes it sounds good even on a factory radio. The Kicker DS and KS pairs and the JL Audio C1 and C2 sets sit at 90 to 91 dB.

The Pioneer TS-G1620F is the simplest budget swap, with a shallow 1-5/8-inch depth and grilles included. The Kicker DS 43DSC6504 has a tweeter with zero protrusion, which helps behind tight factory grilles.

With an amplifier

The Alpine R2-S65 coaxial and R2-S65C component set are listed at 100 W RMS and 300 W peak, Hi-Res Audio certified, with 1-inch magnesium tweeters, and their listings say they are built for amplified systems. The Kicker KS 51KSS6504 takes 15 to 125 W RMS and its crossover has 0, 4.5 or 9 dB tweeter attenuation for tuning.

The JL Audio C2-650 set has outboard crossovers and silk dome tweeters that flush or surface mount, and the Kicker CS 46CSS654 has crossovers with 0, 3 and 6 dB tweeter settings. More power than the factory radio gives lets any of these play louder and cleaner.

6.5 or 6.75, and what fits your car

Many factory doors take a speaker in the 6.5 to 6.75-inch class, and some cars use 6x9, 6x8 or 5.25-inch speakers instead. Do not guess: pick your year, make and model in Shop by vehicle, or open the speaker upgrade guide for your car, to see the verified sizes by spot. 3.5, 4 and 5.25-Inch Car Speakers Compared: Dash and Door Upgrades from JL Audio, Alpine, Kicker, Focal, JBL and Pioneer

Small speakers fill the dash, pillars and smaller doors, and factory ones in those spots often sound thin. On our listings there are 3.5-inch speakers from Pioneer, Kicker, Alpine and JL Audio, 4-inch from Pioneer, JBL, JL Audio, Alpine and Focal, and 5.25-inch from Kicker, JBL, Alpine, JL Audio, Focal and Infinity. Mounting depth matters most in a dash, so it is in the table where the listing gives it. Several listings note they run well on receiver power, such as the JBL Club 44F and 54F and the Pioneer TS-G1020S. The JL Audio C7-350cm and Alpine BRV-S40C are meant for amplified, DSP-tuned systems.

Questions on 6.5-Inch Car Speakers Compared: Coaxial vs Component from JL Audio, Alpine, Kicker, Focal, Hertz and Pioneer

Are component speakers better than coaxial?

For sound staging, usually yes: the separate tweeter can sit higher in the dash or sail panel, and the Alpine and Hertz listings note a clearer front stage than a coaxial. A coaxial is the simpler drop-in swap.

Which speakers sound best on a factory radio?

Efficient ones. The Focal ICU 165 and ISU 165 list 93 dB sensitivity, the highest in our table, and the ISU 165 listing notes it sounds good even on a factory radio.

Do I need an amplifier for new speakers?

No, but it helps. Pairs like the Alpine R2-S65 and R2-S65C are built for amplified systems; others like the Pioneer TS-G1620F and Focal Integration sets are made to sound good on head unit power.

Will a 6.5-inch speaker fit my car?

It depends on the car. Pick your year, make and model in Shop by vehicle or open the speaker upgrade guide for your car to see the verified sizes. Anything not verified says Confirm fit at the shop.

Can you install them the same day?

Often, yes. Call or text first so Tony can set aside time in the bay and confirm the pair you want is on the wall.
