Buy lights for the rooms you actually play, not for the biggest show you have seen online. For most DJs that means one all-in-one bar or effect light plus a small fog or haze machine first, then uplights or moving heads as the gigs grow. Here is how we walk people through it at the shop in South Gate.
Before we point you to any light, we ask two things: where do you play most, and what do you already own? A backyard or living-room house party, a quinceañera or wedding reception in a banquet hall, a club-style night and a church service all want something a little unlike each other.
House parties need quick setup and lights that run on their own while you mix. Quinces and weddings care about how the room looks in photos, so color on the walls matters as much as the dance floor. Club-style nights want movement and beams. Churches usually want clean, steady color and maybe a few moving looks for special moments.
Also think about how you get there. If you load in alone out of a car, one stand that carries most of the show is worth a lot. If you have a helper and a van, a few separate pieces give you more options.
For a lot of mobile DJs, the first buy is the Chauvet DJ GigBAR 2. It puts two derbys, two RGB+UV wash pars, a red and green laser and four white/UV strobes on one bar, and it comes with a tripod, a wireless foot switch, an IRC-6 remote and a bag. It has built-in auto and sound-active programs, so it can run itself while you focus on the music.
If you want something smaller, the Chauvet DJ Kinta FX ILS packs a derby, a strobe and a laser into one fixture that weighs about 3.8 lb. It is a good fit for small parties or as a second light next to a bar later on. The tradeoff is fewer looks than a full bar, but it is easy to carry and set on a speaker stand or truss.
Then add something that makes the beams show. The Chauvet DJ Hurricane 1000 is a compact fog machine with wired and wireless remotes, made for house parties and small events. If you want a finer, longer-lasting look, a hazer like the Chauvet DJ Hurricane Haze 1DX or the ADJ Entour Faze Jr fills the room with an even haze so lights and lasers really show.
In a banquet hall, uplighting the walls changes the whole room. Battery uplights save you from running power cables across a hall. The Chauvet DJ EZLink Par Q4BT ILS runs up to 8 hours with all LEDs on, or 20 hours on a single color, and you can set it from a Bluetooth app. The ADJ Ultra Go Par 7X runs about 5 hours at full on and has 35 built-in color macros.
For patios and gardens, the Chauvet DJ Freedom Par H9 IP is rated IP54 for temporary outdoor use and has built-in D-Fi wireless DMX. If you are fine running power, plug-in pars like the Chauvet DJ SlimPAR Q12 ILS add amber for warmer wedding tones and can power-link up to 10 units.
For a stage or head-table wash, the Chauvet DJ 4BAR LTBT ILS has four aimable heads on one bar and includes a tripod, footswitch and bag. For a first dance, the ADJ Entour Chill makes low-lying fog using regular fog fluid and ice, with no dry ice needed.
Moving heads are usually the next step once you play club-style nights or bigger quinces. The Chauvet DJ Intimidator Spot 110 is small, about 5 lb, with separate gobo and color wheels. The ADJ Pocket Pro is a 25W mini mover at 7.3 lbs with an extra gobo kit in the box. For sharper looks in a small club or church, the Chauvet DJ Intimidator Spot 260X has a 75W LED and motorized focus, at 12.2 lb.
If you would rather keep one stand, the Chauvet DJ GigBAR Move ILS puts two moving heads, a derby, washes, a laser and a strobe on one bar, with a tripod and carry bags included. It draws more power than the GigBAR 2, so plan your outlets.
On lasers, we only go by what the maker says. The Technical Pro LGLaser2 is a small red and green laser that Technical Pro rates for DJ and home use, not commercial installs. The Chauvet DJ Scorpion Dual RGB ILS is a full-color fat-beam laser with zoom from 1 to 29 degrees. With any laser, read the manual, follow venue rules and local rules, and add haze or fog so the beams show.
You do not need a lighting controller to start. Most lights here have built-in auto or sound-active programs, and many come with a remote or foot switch. Some, like the 4BAR LTBT ILS and the EZLink Par Q4BT ILS, can be set from a Bluetooth app on your phone.
ILS is Chauvet DJ's system for grouping ILS lights so they work together. The Chauvet DJ ILS Command is built to run them over a cable or wirelessly through its D-Fi transmitter, and it has a follow spot mode for grand entrances. Most lights need a D-Fi USB receiver for wireless, so ask Joe which of yours have it built in.
DMX is the standard way to control lights from one desk. The Chauvet DJ Obey 40 handles up to 12 fixtures and stores scenes and chases. The ADJ myDMX GO lets you program pars, movers and effects from a tablet app over Wi-Fi or USB. Mixing brands? DMX is the common language; ILS is for Chauvet DJ ILS gear.
Ask the venue about fog and haze before the gig. Some buildings have smoke detectors that may react to fog or haze, and some halls do not allow it at all. Churches and banquet halls often have their own rules, so get a clear yes ahead of time.
Ask about power too: how many outlets near the DJ table, and whether they share a circuit with the kitchen or the caterer. Every light lists its power draw, and it adds up once you have a bar, a few pars and a fog machine on the same line. Bring good extension cords and tape them down.
Outdoors, ask if there is cover. Only some lights are rated for outdoor use, like the Freedom Par H9 IP. Keep stands steady, keep cables out of walkways, and follow the manual for every light, laser and fog machine you run.
Bring Joe this list: the rooms you play most, a rough headcount, whether you load in alone, what lights and stands you already own, and whether you want the lights to run themselves or you want to program them. Photos of a hall you play are a big help.

Pick the GigBAR 3 ILS for house parties when you want color and movement without a laser, and room to grow with ILS. Pick the GigBAR Move ILS for quinceañeras and weddings where moving heads sell the look, and the GigBAR Bridge ILS when you already have effects and want two bigger moving head spots and two washes for bigger shows.

No. Most of these lights run on built-in auto or sound-active programs, and many include a remote or foot switch. A controller like the Obey 40, ILS Command or myDMX GO comes in when you want to program your own looks.
Haze gives a finer, even look that shows beams; fog is thicker and comes in bursts. Either way, ask the venue first, since some have smoke detectors or rules against it.
Only the ones rated for it. The Chauvet DJ Freedom Par H9 IP is rated IP54 for temporary outdoor use. Others, like the EZLink Par Q4BT ILS, are made for indoor halls.
No. We sell gear only, nothing is for hire, and we do not work events. Buy and pick up at the shop in South Gate, and Joe can walk you through settings before you leave.
